Accredited Engineering Online Degrees

For students looking to pursue an engineering online degree, there are several accredited universities which offer a range of specialized engineering online programs.

ABET, Inc. – once known as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology – is a nonprofit organization responsible for the specialized accreditation of institutions of higher learning with degree programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology.

ABET, which supervises the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC), gives accreditation primarily to undergraduate engineering programs in the United States which properly prepare students for the professional fields they intend to enter. While most ABET-accredited programs are campus-based, there are several engineering schools with distance learning options which have received ABET (and thus EAC) accreditation for their undergraduate programs.

This article lists both undergraduate and graduate engineering online degrees available from university engineering programs which have received ABET accreditation at the undergraduate level; this article also details which specialized degree programs are offered by each university.

Aerospace Engineering Online Degree Programs

The following engineering online schools offer degree programs in aerospace engineering:

  1. University of Florida – this university offers a Master of Science in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering with two tracks: the Fundamentals of Thermal Fluids Transport Track and the Solid Mechanics and Design Track
  2. North Carolina State University – Master of Science

Both of these schools provide online courses with video and streaming formats. The University of Florida utilizes its UF Edge platform, which digitally records on-campus lectures and delivers them to online students. This provides online students with both a flexible academic schedule and a learning experience which closely mirrors that of on-campus students

Bioinformatics Online Degree Program

Only one university in the United States, Johns Hopkins University, has received accreditation in bionformatics; this school offers a Master of Science degree with live courses streamed over an online platform. This synchronous system is supplemented with web conferencing technology, allowing students to participate in real time. While this setup is not the most flexible one available for online students, it does provide a high degree of interactivity.

Automotive Engineering Online Degree Programs

A singe university, the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, offers a Master of Automotive Engineering. This engineering online degree delivers its courses through both video online streaming options and recorded videotapes. This degree is meant for professionals who are already working as engineers, and who seek to advance professionally with an added academic degree. It is for this reason that almost all students both work and take part-time classes simultaneously.

Chemical Engineering Online Degree Programs

The following engineering online schools offer accredited distance learning degrees in chemical engineering:

  • Kansas State University – Master of Science
  • North Carolina State University – Master of Science
  • University of North Dakota – Bachelor of Science

These schools offer their degree programs via video and internet delivery systems. Online degrees earned at these three schools are identical to those earned by on-campus students; no differentiation is made between distance learning degrees and on-campus degrees on diplomas.

Civil Engineering Online Degree Programs

The following engineering online programs offer distance learning degrees in civil engineering:

  • University of Florida – Master of Science
  • Kansas State University – Master of Science
  • North Carolina State University – Master of Science
  • University of North Dakota – Bachelor of Science
  • University of Tennessee – Master of Science (Public Works Option)

These schools all deliver their degree programs through online and video course offerings. Of the above schools listed, only the University of Tennessee has a synchronous course schedule in which online students attend live lectures delivered on-campus, giving UT students greater interactivity (while compromising their scheduling flexibility).

Computer Engineering and Computer Science Online Degree Programs

The following universities offer distance learning computer engineering and science programs:

  • University of Florida – Master of Science (with General and Bioinformatics tracks)
  • Iowa State University – Master of Science
  • University of Illinois – Master of Computer Science
  • North Carolina State University – Master of Computer Science
  • University of Minnesota – Master of Computer Science

Of the above schools, the University of Florida is the only one which offers a joint degree in computer engineering and computer science. Additionally, the University of Minnesota – through UNITE Distributed Learning – offers both live, streaming lectures as well as recorded podcasts.

Electrical Engineering Online Degree Programs

The following universities offer distance learning programs in electrical engineering:

  • University of Florida – Master of Science
  • Iowa State University – Master of Science
  • Kansas State University – Master of Science
  • University of North Dakota – Bachelor of Science
  • University of Minnesota – Master of Science

While all of the above schools offer online courses, Iowa State University also provides physical CD-ROM and videotape resources for those students who don’t have stable internet availability.

Engineering Management Online Degree Programs

The following schools offer distance learning engineering management degree programs:

  • Kansas State University – Master of Science
  • University of Tennessee – Master of Management
  • University of Wisconsin – Master of Engineering in Professional Practice

Of these three schools, the University of Wisconsin is the only school to place an emphasis on interactive web conferencing for its course delivery system. The University of Tennessee does stream its lectures live, but without conferencing options.

Environmental Engineering Online Degree Programs

The following schools offer distance learning degrees in environmental engineering:

  • University of Florida – Master of Science (Water Resources Planning & Management)
  • University of Illinois – Graduate Certificate Hazardous Waste Risk and Remediation
  • University of Tennessee – Master of Science
  • Worcester Polytechnic Institute – Master of Science

It should be noted that Worcester Polytechnic Institute also offers a graduate certificate program in addition to its Master of Science offering.

Mechanical Engineering Online Degree Programs

The following universities offer distance learning degrees in mechanical engineering:

  • University of Florida – Master of Science in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
  • University of Illinois – Master of Science
  • Iowa State University – Master of Science
  • Kansas State University – Master of Science
  • North Carolina State – Master of Science
  • University of North Dakota – Bachelor of Science

While all of these university degree programs deliver online courses, Kansas State University and Iowa State University also provide offline video resources for those students who cannot rely on web-based resources at all times.

Benefits of Engineering Online Schools

Most professional and nontraditional students interested in pursuing an academic degree are incapable of attending a campus-based program due to their scheduling demands and logistical limitations. Engineering online degrees allow students to attend classes anywhere, and provide students with flexible course schedules.

With a number of top-tier, accredited state universities offering online engineering degrees, nontraditional students are encouraged to compare programs and find the best educational fit.
